| I had the pleasure of meeting Robert Marx at the First
Southern Hemisphere Maritime Archology Conference, in Fremantle, 1977,
and spent a few days with him on Beacon Island in the Abrolhos Group diving
the Dutch East Indiaman Batavia. Bob always had a story to tell
- I'm still not sure of the diving dogs of Portugal was 'fair dinkum' but
it could be so. He is surely the most prolific writer of shipwreck salvage,
treasure, maritime archaeology, and diving history. If it is debateable
as to whether he is a maritime archaeologist or a treasure hunter (and
I lean toward the former), there is no question of the tremendous amount
of information he has provided through his numerous books. His work on
the sunken city of Port Royal, and numerous Spanish wrecks in quite remarkable.

Most of the descriptions for the following books had be taken from the
jacket flys. Not having read them all thats about the best I can do at
the moment. The descriptions are in typical publishers prose .... "Robert
Marx adds a fluid dimension to the history of the exploration in the sea
in this fascinating and immensely readable book". Thank God Marx can write
better than his publishers.

Treasure, which is frequently referenced for this website.

INTO THE DEEP.
The History of Man's Underwater Exploration.
Robert F. Marx.
Published by Van Nostrand Reinhold Co, New York, 1978.
"Man's centuries-old attempts to move about underwater
have been just as zealous as his better known attempts to fly. This book
brings together all the excitement of those
efforts to dive-the myths and the facts, the tragedies
and triumphs.
Robert Marx, a treasure-hunting diver and marine archaeologist,
begins this history where men first dived: in Mesopotamia 6,500 years ago.
From the ancient world of the
Mediterranean, he traces the history of diving through
the middle ages to Leonardo da Vinci's designs for underwater breathing
devices to modern times and the highly sophisticated equipment of today.
He describes the development of submarines and other weapons; the snorkel
and the scuba; diving bells; deep-sea research capsules; and underwater
habitats - pioneered by Cousteau, Link, Beebe and the Piccards - in which
men have lived and worked for weeks at a time." [ps]
DEEP, DEEPER, DEEPEST
Man's Exoloration of the Sea.
Robert F. Marx.
Best Publishing Co, 1998
Softcover, 324 pages, mono photographs.
Same book as Into The Deep, except for an additional
chapter: Treasure Hunting Goes High Tech.
Best Publishing does not acknowledge that this is a copy
of a previou publication.
If anyone can write a book on ‘Man’s
Exploration of theSea’ it is Robert Marx. His treasure and archaeological
finds are quiteamazing, and with fifteen books to his credit, he is well
versed to writethis book. His style is easy and interesting and the photographs
are adequateto complement the text. He starts of with free diving, then
goes into theearly diving bells, diving machines and helmet diving. Armoured
divingsuits get a mention, and of course the modern scuba equipment. Additionalchapter
cover warfare, submersibles, underwater habitats, underwater archaeology, sunken
treasure, and oceanography. A very good read - interesting and informative.

PIRATE PORT
The Story of the Sunken City of Port Royal.
Robert F. Marx.
First publishing Great Britain in 1968 by Pelham Books,
London.
First published in the USA by The World Publishing Co,
1967.
Hardcover, dustjacket, 190 pages, mono photographs.
"When Morgan the pirate made it his headquarters, Port
Royal was known as
the most wicked city in the world. Then one sunny day
at noon the sky reddened, the earth shook, and the town and two thousand
of its
inhabitants were swallowed up. Since that fateful day
in 1692, four-fifths of Port Royal has lain beneath. the water at the bottom
of Kingston Harbour.
Now Robert Marx, Underwater Archaeologist for the Government
of
Jamaica, is wresting Port Royal's secret's from the sea.
He tells how he and his divers explore the sunken city in scuba gear, bringing
up clay pipes, ancient bottles, pewter tankards, pieces of eight, and other
treasures that have been hidden beneath the ocean for nearly three hundred
years."

SEA FEVER
The real life stories of the scientists, treasure divers,
and archaeologists engged in exploring and developing man's knowlewdge
of the oceans.
Robert F. Marx.
Published in 1972 by Doubleday & Co, New York.
Hardcover, dustjacket, 250 pages, mono photographs.
"An encounter with a giant moray eel; the discovery of
the wreck of a bronzeage ship; experiencing nitrogen narcosis or "rapture
of the deeps" - these are only three of the things that happened
to the scientists, archaeologists and treasure diver's whose stories are
told in this book. You'll meet people like Pablo Bush Romero (a top authority
on Mexican archaeology and leader of an expedition to the Mayan remains
at the Sacred
Well of Chichen-itza ), Kip Wagner (the only treasure
hunter who became a millionaire through his finds), and Eugenie Clark (director
of a marine laboratory and one of the world's leading authorities on sharks).
But, whatever their particular interest, they share a love of seas, lakes
and other bodies of water aild an overwhelming desire to probe their mysteries;
a trait that seems, from the discovery of deepwater shells and other artifacts
in the ancient cities of Mesopotamia to have existed in mankind foir 6000
years."
Covers the life and achievements of: Art McKee, Tom Gurr,
Pablo Bush Romero, Norman Scott, Anders Franzen, Eugie Clark, Kip Wagner,
Mel Fisher, Hannes Keller, Teddy Tucker, Dimitri Rebikoff, Ed Link, Peter
Throckmorton, George Bass, Neal Watson, Jacques Piccard. This is an important
work, although you wouldn't think so from the blurb on the front fly -
'an encounter with a giant moray, experiencing rapturs of the deep' - the
publishers are directing this book to the general reader looking for sensationalism.
It i s too important a work to be promoted with such drivel. Wonder why
Marx doesn't mention Harry Reiseberg. This book reminds me of Terry Norton's
excellent book Stars beneath the Sea, published in 1999, which is also
about diving pioneers. [ps] |

SHIPWRECKS OF THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE, 1492-1825
"A complete guide to every major shipwreck in the Western
Hemisphere and an introduction to the delights of underwater archaeology,
diving for treasure, and exploring the world below the sea.
Robert F. Marx
Published 1971 by World Publishing Company, New York.
Hardcover, dust jacket, 482 pp, index, bibliography,
photographs.
Wrecks are listed chronologically within region.
From the fly: In this one comprehensive volume, Robert
F. Marx tells you everything you need to know about exploring the ocean's
depths-from the precise locations where ships were lost to the best techniques
for bringing their contents to the surface. For several years the author
care- fully researched the archives, li- braries and museums of Europe
and North America (reading old lists in Lloyds of London and unfolding
original documents in the depos- itories of Seville), amassing a file of
more than 28,500 shipwrecks throughout the world. For this book he has
selected only the most significant finds in the Western Hemisphere from
the time of Co- lumbus until about 1825. This is no mere catalogue of wrecks;
it is an organized manual of discovery based solidly on Marx's vast experience
combing the oceans' floors.
