PEARSON'S
Specifically: THE AUGUST PEARSONS 1901. Number 68, Volume XII. Published by C. Arthur Pearson Ltd, Henrietta Street, London. About National Geographic size, 110 pages plus 24 pages of advertissements at the beginning of the magazine. Obviously a monthly, this was a most popular magazine in its day and I can see why. It comtains a number of excellent fiction and non-fiction articles - and in this particular issue it starts with a frontal nude which would nopt have done any harm to the distribution. The adds themselves are most amusing - "All fat people can be cured by Trilene Tablets'; Maconochie's Dainty Foods; Kutnow's Powder for Liver Disorders and Biliousness; Dr Melcher's Shower Yoke; and of course the wonderful Diano which 'develops the bust' - and Vonolia Cream (don't ask!). But I digress - this website is about underwaters matters; in this particular magazine we have a nude - sorry, I have already mentioned that - three articles of some 'underwater' interest. The main one of interest is a seven-page article on 'Wreck Raising' - the wrecks being raised by floating derricks - no diving content unfortunately. There is a nine-page article called 'The Salvage of the Santa Maria by W.A.Fraser - I'm not too sure iof this is fiction or fact - I think the former. 'Hunting The Blue Whale' is about the Norwegians, and is illustrated with photographs. And as somewhat of a bonus there is a serialised novel called The Sea Lady by H.G.Wells, the author of 'The War of the Worlds' of course. [ps] ..
