IN THE SEA
Editors: Yu-Chong Lin, and Kathleen Shida.
Best Publishing Company, San Pedro, California, 1990.
Hard cover, dust jacket, many mono diagrams, just a few mono photographs. Volume 1 330 pages, index. Volume 2m 230 pages, index.
This two-volume book is the product of a truly international effort, with contributions from scholars from eight countries, who made presentations at the Second International Symposium on Man in the Sea, held over four days, November 13-16, 1988, in Honolulu, covering the following topics: Saturation Diving (Compression, Pressure Adaptation, and Decompression), Sports Diving, Hyperbaric Medicine, and Man in the Sea in Manned Submersibles. Volume I is devoted to Saturation Diving, and Volume II, to the remaining topics. It gets pretty technical but for the professional diver or serious recreational diver and instructor there is much to learn. If you want to know the mean subcutaneoius fat thickness of American and Korean women and men divers and the critical water temperature that they can survive and work, then this is the book. Perhaps you are intersted in the determination of urine flow during a saturation dive. Hey - someone has to know these things. Direct reference to sports diving accounts for just 100 pages; add another eighty pages on hyperbaric medicine which is always relevant. [pjs]
