CLASSIC DIVE BOOKS

    United Kingdom Dive Location

With the excellent contribution of collector Phil Thurtle in England, and the vast number of superb shipwreck diving books published in the UK, I thought it best to have a separate page. Having said that, the list is miniscule compared to what is available. If a UK collector wants to create a specific UK shipwreck book website I'll gladly link to it.

Please note: The books are listed for interest only, and not offered for sale.

    DIVE NORTH EAST
    Dave Shaw and Barry Winfield
Published by: Underwater World Publications in 1988. (DIVER Magazine)
Printed card covers;  159 printed pages. Dimensions: 21 cms tall by 15 cms wide
Published in a series of books called “A Diver Guide” by DIVER Magazine of Teddington, Middlesex in London. This one covers the English north east coastline from Redcar up to Berwick Upon Tweed on the England/Scotland border. It is divided into 15 chapters: “How to Use This Book”, “Introduction to the North East”, “Access”, “Decompression Accidents”, “Marine Life”, “Diving and Fishermen”, “Wrecks”, “Dive Planning”, “Accommodation”, “Area 1 – Redcar to Seaham”, “Area 2 – Sunderland to Tynemouth”, “Cullercoats to Blyth”, “Newbiggin to Beadnell”, “The Farne Islands” and “Holy Island to Berwick”.
Each dive site and wreck is thoroughly researched with positions and many monochrome photographs. Maybe you will know the Farne Islands more for one of it’s local heroines – Grace Darling who, with her father the Longstone lighthouse keeper, rowed out and rescued several seamen from the ill fated Forfarshire which had run aground on nearby rocks in a severe storm.
The cover photograph is very interesting as it shows Selby Brown at the wheel of the wreck of the Chris Christenson, one of the wrecks featured in this book. His regulator is hidden from view but Selby used to own a guest house and restaurant called “The Lodge” in Seahouses, many of the dive sites are reached from there. Inside the restaurant, the sequence of photographs taken on the dive, including this one, were mounted on the wall in a large frame and you can see where the DV was stowed for the photograph to be taken. There was also a large glass case in the restaurant with many of Selby’s finds from a wonderful wreck called the Somalia and others in the area.  [pt]
    DIVE NORTH WEST SCOTLAND
Subtitle: The DIVER Guide to Scotland – Vol II
    Gordon Ridley
Published by: Underwater World Publications in 1985. (DIVER Magazine). (This is a revised 1990 edition)
Printed card covers;  200 printed pages. Dimensions: 21 cms tall by 15 cms wide
Published in a series of books called “A Diver Guide” by DIVER Magazine of Teddington, Middlesex in London. This one covers the Scottish North West and North coastline from the Sound of Mull to John O’Groats. This is volume II of 4 publications that cover the whole of Scotland. It is divided into 16 chapters: "How to Use This Book”, “Marine Life in Scottish Waters”, “The Sound of Mull”, “Mull”, “Tiree and Coll”, “The Small Isles”, “Loch Sunart to Loch Hourn”, “Skye and its Associated Islands”, “Kylerhea to Rubha Reidh”, “Rubha Reidh to Rubha to Rubha Coigeach”, “The Summer Isles”, “Rubha Coigeach to Rubha Ruadh”, “Rubha Ruadh to Cape Wrath”, “cape Wrath to Kyle of Tongue” and “Kyle of Tongue to Duncansby Head (John O’Groats)”.”
As with all of these publications, each dive site and wreck is thoroughly researched with positions and many monochrome photographs, it also includes drawings of the wrecks and maps. I haven’t dived the North of Scotland but have dived the North West many times from the Sound of Mull to Skye. It is one of my favourite dive places in the world, good diving and beautiful scenery both under and above the water. Always plenty of nice malt whiskys to taste and a warm welcome everywhere – fond memories of the Mishnish Hotel in Tobermory on the Island of Mull. (Booked another “live aboard” for 2011 with other members of my diving club, something to look forward to.)  [pt]
    DIVE SOUTH DEVON
    Kendall McDonald

Printed card covers;   216  pages; dimensions: 21 cms tall by 15 cms wide.
Published in a series of books called “A Diver Guide” by DIVER Magazine of Teddington, Middlesex in London.  This one covers the English coastline of South Devon from Lyme Bay moving east to Plymouth Sound.  The book cover boasts over 360 offshore and coastal dive sites including 250 plus wreck sites.  It is broken down into 10 chapters and 2 appendixes: “How to Use This Guide”, “About South Devon”, “Dive Planning”, “Area 1 - Lyme Bay”, “Area 2 - Babbacombe Bay”, “Area 3 - Tor Bay”, “Area 4 – Start Bay”, “Area 5 – The Bolt”, “Area 6 – Bigbury Bay” and “Area 7 – Plymouth Sound”.  The two appendix’s cover “Dive Services” and “The Divers Code of Conduct”. DIVE YORKSHIRE
    Arthur Godfrey and Peter Lassey
Published by: Underwater World Publications in 1988. (DIVER Magazine)
Printed card covers;  188 printed pages. Dimensions: 21 cms tall by 15 cms wide
Published in a series of books called “A Diver Guide” by DIVER Magazine of Teddington, Middlesex in London. This one covers the English North East coastline from the River Humber up to the River Tees. It is divided into 16 chapters: “How to Use This Book”, “Introduction to the Yorkshire”, “Access”, “Accommodation”, “Marine Life”, “Dive Planning”, “Emergencies”, “Divers & Fishermen”, “Shipwrecks”, “Area 1 – River Tees to Runswick Bay”, “Area 2 – Whitby: Kettleness to Robin Hoods Bay”, “Area 3 –Scarborough: Robin Hoods Bay to Scarborough”, “Area 4 – Filey Brigg”, “Area 5 –Flamborough Head”, “Area 6 – Bridlington Bay” and “Area 7 – Spurn”.
Each dive site and wreck is thoroughly researched with positions and many monochrome photographs although it is getting a bit dated now. Another useful feature is that there is a simple map of each area and each wreck is roughly located to help make a choice of dive depending upon conditions and time constraints I do most of my diving in this area and this book has been very valuable in the background reading of many of the wrecks I have dived. Another useful publication which preceded this one (by the same authors) is “Shipwrecks off the Yorkshire Coast”. [pt]
